Why Automatic Backup Is Important

Some people I preach automatic online backup to insist that they take care of their computer backup manually all by themselves, because, they insist, they have the skills to do so.

The skills are not what I am questioning, it’s the regularity of utilizing those skills.

You see, a few weeks ago I had an appointment for another tech to work with me at a client of mine and when he arrived he apologized that he was not as prepared as he should be because the hard drive on his new laptop crashed and he not only lost some data but a lot of time trying to piece it back together.

And, he pointed out, he has a rather sophisticated backup plan – it just hadn’t been implemented in about 2 weeks.

There are several lessons to be learned from this.

  • Computer Backup just does not seem to happen unless it happens AUTOMATICALLY
  • Just because a hard drive (laptop) is new does NOT mean it WON’T CRASH!
  • Backup does not need to be complicated or sophisticated, it just needs to be adequate and performed!

Automatic Online Backup

This is why I am such a proponent of automatic online backup. Once configured properly, and that is one thing we aim to help you with here at Online Backup Spot, the backup runs automatically and in the case of many of the services, backs up a file almost immediately after you create or update it.

I have years of experience helping people with computer backup and restoration of data. Invariably, whenever someone hands me their most recent backup and I ask how old it is they give me an age that is much newer than it really is.

What does this mean? It means it has been longer since they have backed up than they thought.

With my business clients, they have automated backup that they have hired me to install, configure and check weekly to make sure the backup has gone as planned; with the addition of a DAILY email to let me know if all went well or not.

And guess what? Whenever I need to restore a file for a client, the restore process is smooth, successful and usually performed by me remotely.

All because they have AUTOMATIC computer backup.

The computer tech I mentioned above would have had ZERO data loss had he subscribed to a basic online backup account with any of the online backup services we recommend here at Online Backup Spot.

What The Disaster In Japan Teaches Us About Online Backup

How Close Are Your Backups To The Systems They Mirror?

I have conversations with people all the time who have backups that stored off site and they feel well protected because of that; but that “site” is not that far away from the computer systems those backups are created from. The recent Japan disaster brought on by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami demonstrates what CAN happen.

First let me say that our hearts go out to the people affected by that horrible disaster, and hope only the best for the families who lost loved ones and everything they owned.

But it is frustrating to see so many people make the mistake of thinking that something that bad won’t happen to them. Just because you don’t live in a fault zone or near the ocean does not mean that you do not need geographically diverse backups.

Maybe you live by or downwind of a nuclear plant whereby an “incident” there could render all of your backups unsafe to even touch. Again, a lesson to be learned from this recent crisis in Japan.

Entire communities, even large cities, can be leveled, flooded or even swept out to sea. And it could happen to you.

The Solution Is So Easy And Affordable

It’s one thing when you have a potential problem and there are no viable solutions. Such was the case with geographically diverse backups just 10 years ago.

Stories in the disaster recovery community would circulate of companies located in high rise buildings ABOVE a floor where there was a fire. Their own particular office space was not damaged, yet the Fire Marshal would not allow anyone into the entire building due to safety concerns.

Something of this nature can be solved by taking backups to a bank safety deposit box or a trusted employee’s home.

Large scale disasters, though, are not protected against by that type of action.

Online Backup Is More Reliable Anyway

Any client I have ever known to take backups to an off site location would forget from time to time, some more often than others.

That’s the beauty of a good online backup service; the backup occurs automatically, to a data storage facility that is as protected as man can make it – at a location FAR away from where you are at.

In fact, if you happen to be in the general vicinity of an online backup service data center that does not have geographically redundant storage, I would suggest NOT using that particular service.

Protect your data, protect your business, protect your memories.

Online backup is safe, secure, reliable, affordable and perhaps best of all, automatic.

Mozy Home Adds Mobile Apps and Sync

Mozy Home online backup is getting with the program and adding mobile apps for iPad, iPhone and Android. They aren’t out yet, but are announced as coming.

In addition, they are working on syncing computers.

This is all good because Mozy, one of the first to get into the online backup service space, is lagging in features and, oh, by the way, just raised their price and eliminated the unlimited storage option a month ago.

Here is the text of the email from Mozy Home:

We’re pleased to announce the upcoming release of two exciting new Mozy features: mobile apps for iPhone and Android, and a private beta of Mozy file sync. With Mozy file sync you’ll be able to synchronize your files across all your computers automatically. No more emailing a copy to yourself. No more saving to a USB drive.

With the mobile apps you’ll be able to access your backed up files from your iOS (iPhone & iPad) or Android device. Quickly view photo thumbnails and download the full file (high resolution) right to your mobile device. Additionally, you can email any of your backed up files to friends and family.

We will be updating our Mozy Home review as well as our comparison spreadsheet in anticipation of these new features.

Hopefully, the people at Mozy won’t keep us waiting too long.
